ROLE AT A GLANCE:
The Staff Engineer is a hands-on senior technical leader within Herbalife’s Digital Technology
organization, operating at the first individual-contributor level whose impact spans multiple teams
within a domain — positioned above Senior Engineer and below Principal Engineer on the technical
track. Embedded directly with product engineering teams, the Staff Engineer sets technical direction,
provides architectural guidance, drives adoption of modern platform standards and engineering
practices, and mentors senior engineers across multiple teams within a domain or office. This is a
pure individual contributor role — influence comes through technical depth, clarity, and leadership
rather than positional authority. Staff Engineers stay hands-on, writing production code regularly
(roughly half of their time) while devoting the balance to architecture, technical strategy, and cross-
team alignment; they serve as the technical conscience and quality bar-setter for their area and
partner with engineering leadership to translate enterprise technical vision into execution.
HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT:
• Provide hands-on technical leadership and set technical direction across multiple teams within
a domain or office, writing production-grade code roughly half of the time, reviewing others’
work, and modeling what great engineering looks like.
• Drive adoption of platform standards, modern tooling, and engineering best practices —
version control, testing, build/deploy, observability, and security — and implement the technical
baseline through code review, pairing, and proactive intervention.
• Lead resolution of the most complex, ambiguous technical problems in the area, serving as
the point of escalation and driving root-cause analysis and systemic improvement for
production incidents.
• Mentor and level up engineers across the domain, including senior engineers, through pairing,
design collaboration, and deliberate knowledge transfer — with impact measured by the
growth of the engineers around them.
• Lead the technical health and velocity of the domain, identifying recurring problems and
building shared tooling, automation, runbooks, and training that lift the whole team.
• Partner with the Sr. Director and Distinguished Engineer to translate enterprise-level technical
strategy and roadmap into on-the-ground execution, while providing bottom-up input on
platform priorities based on the team’s real needs.
• Build cross-team alignment and communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers
and non-technical stakeholders, producing the design docs, decision records, and
documentation that keep teams aligned.
• Raise the engineering baseline beyond your immediate team by creating training content,
running working sessions, and bringing modern industry practices, tools, and patterns into the
organization.
• Additional duties as assigned.
TEAM DYNAMICS:
• You’ll be embedded within Herbalife’s distributed Digital Technology organization, working
hands-on across teams spanning the US, Guadalajara, and Bangalore during a multi-year
platform transformation. The environment is collaborative and code-first: you’ll pair with
engineers daily, partner closely with product, security, and enterprise architecture, and work
directly with the Sr. Director of Engineering and Distinguished Engineer to bring modern
engineering practices to a team that is eager to level up. Comfort working across time zones
and cultures is crucial.
LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• N/A — This is a pure individual contributor role with no direct reports or people-management
accountability. Leadership is exercised through technical influence, mentorship, and setting
the engineering quality bar rather than positional authority.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or
equivalent practical experience.
Experience
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on work in
modern web application development, platform engineering, or cloud-native architecture, with
at least 2 years operating at a senior level driving technical decisions across more than one
team.
• Hands-on experience adopting or extending modern platform and developer-experience
tooling: CI/CD pipelines, shared libraries and service templates, API gateways, contract
testing, and observability (e.g., OpenTelemetry).
• Working knowledge of distributed systems patterns — event-driven architecture, message
streaming, synchronous vs. asynchronous tradeoffs, and service-to-service authentication.
• Track record of writing architecture and design documentation — decision records, runbooks
— that engineers actively use and that is maintained as a living standard.
• Experience using engineering health metrics (deployment frequency, change failure rate,
incident volume) to guide technical decisions within a team or domain.
• Demonstrable experience driving cross-team technical alignment, adopting modern
engineering practices (trunk-based development, CI/CD, observability, automated testing),
and mentoring senior engineers. Experience working across distributed teams and time zones
strongly preferred
Skills/Certifications
• Deep expertise in at least one engineering domain (frontend, backend, platform, or data) with
strong working knowledge across the full stack.
• Fluency with modern software development practices and AI-assisted development, with the
ability to model their effective use for the team.
• Strong architecture and design skills, with experience authoring technical decision records
and design documentation that others reference.
• Excellent communication and mentorship skills — patient, empathetic, and committed to
knowledge transfer; able to influence without positional authority.
• Data-informed decision-making — able to define and use engineering metrics to guide
architecture, prioritization, and continuous improvement, with a strong grasp of trunk-based
development and feature flagging
